Apple’s $699 OLED iPad mini Hides Its Full A20 Pro in the 512GB Model

Apple’s 2026 iPad mini adds OLED, IP67 protection and a thinner design, but only the 512GB model gets the full A20 Pro. Here is which version makes sense.

Apple has introduced the first OLED iPad mini, a thinner $699 tablet with an 8.5-inch display, IP67 water resistance and the A20 Pro chip. Preorders open Wednesday, October 28, and deliveries begin November 6.

The headline upgrades are substantial, but the configuration table needs closer attention. Apple reserves the complete A20 Pro setup for the 512GB model. The 128GB and 256GB versions use a five-core CPU and one 16-core Neural Engine; the 512GB version gets a sixth CPU core and a second 16-core Neural Engine.

That makes this less like a routine storage choice. Buyers are also choosing between two processor configurations, and only the higher storage tiers can be ordered with Apple’s $100 nano-texture glass.

What changed in the 2026 iPad mini

The display is the clearest day-to-day upgrade. Apple increased the diagonal size from 8.3 to 8.5 inches without enlarging the tablet’s footprint, largely by making the bezels 24 percent thinner. The OLED panel has a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a one-nit minimum brightness and up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness for HDR highlights. Full-screen SDR and HDR brightness tops out at 600 nits.

The enclosure is 5.4 millimeters thick and the Wi-Fi model weighs 255 grams, down from 6.3 millimeters and 293 grams on the previous generation. It is also the first iPad mini with an IP67 rating, covering immersion in one meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions. Apple notes that water resistance can diminish with wear and liquid damage is not covered by the warranty.

Other practical changes include a landscape-mounted 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, fast charging to roughly 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 35W or higher adapter, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple’s N1 networking chip. Cellular models use the C2 modem, which Apple claims can deliver data speeds up to 50 percent faster than the previous mini.

The speaker design is new as well. Apple calls it Acoustic Display: woofers couple through the screen, while tweeters sit between the glass and aluminum enclosure. The sealed arrangement helps the tablet meet its water-resistance rating.

The A20 Pro changes with storage capacity

Apple’s technical specifications split the chip into two versions. The 128GB and 256GB models have two high-performance “super” cores, three efficiency cores, a seven-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The 512GB model adds a fourth efficiency core and doubles the Neural Engine to 32 cores.

The GPU does not change between tiers. Every configuration includes seven graphics cores, Neural Accelerators in those GPU cores and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Apple claims maximum gains of 60 percent in multithreaded CPU performance, 2.7 times in graphics and 4.5 times in AI workloads compared with the A17 Pro model, although those figures describe selected tests and the best-performing configuration rather than an across-the-board result.

For web browsing, reading, streaming, note-taking and most games, the missing efficiency core should not determine a purchase. The larger distinction is the second Neural Engine. It may matter to people who deliberately run local image generators, language models or other machine-learning workloads on the iPad, but it does not make the 512GB model a requirement for Apple Intelligence or Siri AI.

What did not improve

The new model keeps the same advertised battery life, storage capacities, Apple Pencil support and USB-C data-transfer speed as the A17 Pro iPad mini. Apple’s specification sheet also does not list ProMotion, so the move to OLED does not bring the adaptive high-refresh display used on iPad Pro.

Touch ID remains in the top button, and the rear camera is still a single 12-megapixel wide camera. The tablet works with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C, but neither is included. The new TechWoven Smart Folio costs $79.

Color choice has narrowed to midnight and starlight, replacing the four finishes offered on the previous generation. Apple also reduced the battery capacity slightly, from 19.3Wh to 18.9Wh, while keeping the same battery-life claim.

Which iPad mini should you buy?

Choose the 128GB model if the mini is mainly a reader, travel tablet, streaming screen or note-taking device. It gets the same OLED panel, slim enclosure, IP67 rating, cameras, GPU and wireless features as the more expensive configurations. At $699 for Wi-Fi or $849 with cellular, it is already a premium compact tablet.

Choose 256GB if you store larger games, downloaded video or creative projects locally. This tier also unlocks the optional nano-texture glass. That coating is most defensible for pilots, field technicians, artists and readers who regularly work under harsh overhead light or outdoors. It adds $100 and requires more careful cleaning, so it is not an automatic upgrade for home use.

Choose 512GB only when you need both the storage and the full processor. The extra CPU core and doubled Neural Engine are meaningful for sustained on-device AI work, but paying for them solely to make ordinary apps feel faster is difficult to justify before independent testing.

Owners of the 2024 A17 Pro model can generally wait. OLED, lower weight, water resistance and fast charging improve the hardware, but the prior mini already supports Apple Intelligence, Apple Pencil Pro and the same basic storage range. A discounted A17 Pro model may also remain the better buy for someone who values the compact form more than the new display.

Software adds a useful external-display mode

The iPad mini ships with iPadOS 27 and supports Siri AI in beta on iPadOS 27.2. Apple says the assistant can use personal context, interpret on-screen content and act across supported apps. The same update adds an “Excluded Apps” control that lets users prevent Siri, Search and suggestions from accessing selected applications.

More consequential for work setups, iPadOS 27.2 gives the new mini an extended external-display mode rather than simple screen mirroring. Combined with resizable windows and window tiling, it lets the small tablet drive a second workspace when connected to a monitor.

Apple’s launch announcement says preorders begin at 10:10 a.m. Pacific on October 28 in 36 countries and regions. Store availability starts November 6. The sensible default is the base model; the 512GB configuration is a specialist choice for buyers who can name the local AI or storage-heavy workflow they intend to run.

EU Biometric Border Delays Turn Smart Travel Into a Capacity Test

Europe’s Entry/Exit System is replacing passport stamps with biometric border records for non-EU travelers, but airlines and airports warn the rollout is producing queues of up to five hours before the peak summer travel season. The problem is not just passenger inconvenience: it is a real-world test of whether digital identity systems can survive airport-scale operations.
