Gemini in Chrome Arrives on Android as Auto Browse Goes Mobile

Google made Gemini in Chrome available to all Android users in the U.S. on August 18, with page summaries, Google app connections, Nano Banana image tools, and paid auto browse support for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The useful change is mobile browser assistance; the risk is letting an agent act too close to accounts, purchases, and private page context.

Google has made Gemini in Chrome available to all Android users in the United States, turning the mobile browser into a front door for Google’s AI assistant rather than just another place to open the Gemini app.

The August 18 rollout brings Gemini directly into Chrome on Android for page summaries, questions about the current webpage, Google app connections, and image generation or editing through Nano Banana. The larger shift is for paid users: Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. can also use auto browse on Android, letting Chrome handle some multi-step web tasks from the phone.

That makes this more than a convenience update. Chrome is moving from “show me information” toward “do something on the web for me,” and Google is now putting that agentic browsing model into the mobile workflow where many people already shop, read, travel, check email, and manage errands.

What Gemini in Chrome Does on Android

Gemini in Chrome can be opened from the Gemini icon or the three-dot menu in Chrome on Android. Once active, it can use the current page as context, so a reader can ask for a summary of a long article, an explanation of a technical concept, or a more specific answer based on what is visible in the browser.

Google’s earlier Android preview described the assistant as a way to ask questions about the page without switching apps, and the final rollout keeps that same basic idea. The assistant can also work with Google services such as Calendar and Keep, which makes the feature more useful than a plain webpage summarizer. A recipe can become a Keep note, an event page can become a calendar entry, and a dense webpage can become a short explanation.

Nano Banana support adds a creative layer inside the browser. Google says users can generate or customize images while browsing, such as turning a page into an infographic or changing the appearance of an image found online. That will be useful for study aids, mood boards, presentations, and quick visual drafts, though users still need to treat generated visuals as AI output rather than verified source material.

Auto Browse Is the Bigger Test

Auto browse is the more consequential feature because it lets Gemini act across webpages, not just answer questions about them. Google’s examples include booking parking for an event, updating a recurring online order, and organizing travel. In other words, Chrome is starting to behave less like a passive browser and more like an assistant that can navigate forms, account pages, and shopping flows.

The feature is not open to everyone. Google says auto browse on Android is available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. The company’s Chrome AI features page also describes auto browse as a paid U.S. feature for those subscription tiers.

Google is trying to draw a control boundary around the risky parts. The company says auto browse is designed to ask for confirmation before completing some sensitive actions, and its May Android preview gave purchases and social media posting as examples of actions that require user confirmation. That confirmation step matters because a browser agent can encounter misleading page content, dark patterns, malicious prompts, or simply the wrong account state.

Who Can Use It

The rollout is broad, but not universal. Google’s support guidance says Android users need to be 18 or older, be in a supported region, use the latest version of Chrome, sign in to Chrome, and have an Android phone with at least 4GB of RAM running Android 12 or later. Incognito mode is not supported, and Google’s availability page says the device language must be set to English.

That means many recent Android phones should qualify, but some older or lower-memory devices will not. It also means the feature is tied to a signed-in Chrome session, which is important for anyone thinking about shared devices, work profiles, school-managed devices, or phones used by multiple family members.

Outside reporting from 9to5Google notes that the Android interface appears as a sheet similar to the desktop experience. The current page can be added as prompt context, and users can disable that behavior in settings. The tools menu also exposes controls for Personal Intelligence, including connected apps such as Calendar and Keep.

The Settings Worth Checking First

For ordinary page summaries, the main risk is over-trusting a response. Gemini can condense a long webpage, but summaries can miss caveats, collapse competing claims, or misread a page with ads, comments, tables, or embedded content. Readers should still open the source page before relying on a detail for purchases, health, finance, travel, schoolwork, or work decisions.

For auto browse, the first check is whether the task actually needs an agent. Letting Chrome compare options or gather details is a lower-risk use. Letting it change an order, interact with an account, or prepare a purchase deserves more attention. Users should read the final page, check the account being used, and confirm the price, shipping address, dates, cancellation terms, and payment method before approving anything.

The second check is app context. Connected apps can make Gemini more useful, but they also widen the set of personal information available to the assistant. Calendar, Gmail, Keep, Maps, Shopping, Flights, and similar integrations can turn a vague request into a useful result, but users should connect only the apps they actually want Chrome to use.

The third check is page sharing. If Chrome is using the current webpage as context, that can include sensitive account pages, documents, forms, health portals, invoices, internal dashboards, or private messages opened in the browser. Google gives users controls over what Gemini in Chrome can access and whether activity is stored, but those controls are worth reviewing before making the feature part of a daily mobile workflow.

Why It Matters

Google’s confirmation prompts and prompt-injection defenses are necessary, but they do not remove the need for user judgment.

The practical takeaway is simple: Gemini in Chrome on Android is now useful enough to try for summaries, explanations, study aids, and low-risk browsing help. Auto browse is the feature to watch more carefully. It is the clearest sign yet that AI agents are moving from demos into the everyday browser, one mobile errand at a time.
